Director's Talk: Céline Sciamma

In de Director’s Talk vertelt IFA-eregast Céline Sciamma uitgebreid over haar werk, haar inspiraties en de rol van vrouwelijke en queer filmmakers in de hedendaagse filmindustrie. Aan de hand van filmscenes en fragmenten gaat zij hierover in gesprek met Renske Diks; filmkenner, programmeur voor Filmhuis Alkmaar en Rialto (Queer Pioneers), en schrijver (Queens of Beirut).

Céline Sciamma is zonder twijfel een van de meest toonaangevende makers van het moment. Ze is regisseur en scenarist van Naissance des Pieuvres, Tomboy en Girlhood, maar haar bekendste film is waarschijnlijk wel Portrait de la jeune fille en feu, een kostuumdrama over een overdonderende liefde in het Bretagne van de 18^e eeuw. Sciamma’s meest recente werk dat op IFA te zien was, is Petite Maman; een persoonlijke film, waarin het gesprek tussen generaties, het subthema van IFA dit jaar, wel heel duidelijk én ongebruikelijk wordt ingevuld. Sciamma laat in haar films de ‘female gaze’ duidelijk naar voren komen, een tegenwerping van de ‘male gaze’ die benadrukt hoe we films en filmmaken vaak door de ogen van mannen zien. Sciamma spreekt zich ook buiten haar films hierover uit, net als over gelijke rechten en gendergelijkheid in de filmindustrie.

In the Director's Talk, guest of honor Céline Sciamma speaks extensively about her work, her inspirations and the role of female and queer filmmakers in the current film industry. Accompanied by various scenes and fragments, the conversation will be led by Renske Diks; film expert, programmer for Filmhuis Alkmaar and Rialto (Queer Pioneers), and writer (Queens of Beirut).

Céline Sciamma is without a doubt one of the leading makers of the moment. She directed and wrote Naissance des Pieuvres, Tomboy and Girlhood, though her best-known film is probably Portrait de la jeune fille en feu, a period drama about an overwhelming love in 18th century Brittany. Sciamma's most recent work shown at IFA is the personal film Petite Maman, in which the conversation between generations, the subtheme of IFA this year, is shown in a wonderful, unusual way. An important part in Sciamma’s films is the 'female gaze', a rebuttal to the 'male gaze' that emphasizes how we often see films and filmmaking through the eyes of men. Sciamma also speaks out about this outside of her films, as well as about equal rights and gender equality in the film industry.
