Sirens

In Sirens volgt regisseur Rita Baghdadi Slave to Sirens, een feministische thrash metal band uit Libanon. Ze navigeren hun weg naar bekendheid ten tijde van de 17 oktober-revolutie, een periode van Libanese opstand tegen het wanbeleid van een corrupte regering. De bandleden zitten vol dromen, maar zijn ondertussen ook geteisterd door (inter)generationele trauma's. In een land vol repressie, misogynie en homofobie, laat de film hun strijd voor vrijheid van zelfexpressie zien.

Het resultaat is een intiem en gelaagd portret van een band met een groot aantal facetten. Het ene moment staan de bandleden bij een protest tussen loeiende sirenes en sissend traangas, schreeuwend om de val van het Libanese regime. Het volgende moment doen ze elkaars make-up, om daarna met zwaar distorted gitaren headbangend op het podium te staan. En tussen dit alles door speelt een ontluikende, geheime queer relatie tussen gitarist Lilas en iemand uit Syrië.

VERA Zienema, onderdeel van het legendarische underground poppodium VERA Groningen, vertoont iedere week een eigenzinnige film. Van obscure genrefilms tot klassiekers en van documentaires tot films met live muziek – van alles komt voorbij. Zienema programmeert voor de derde keer een avond met IFA in de week voorafgaand aan het festival, en vertoont dit jaar de muziekdocumentaire Sirens van Rita Baghdadi, waarin ze de eerste all female thrash metal band uit Libanon volgt tijdens hun weg naar bekendheid.

Op dinsdag 7 maart draait Sirens in VERA Zienema (adres: Oosterstraat 44, Groningen). De avond wordt ingeleid door Zienema-programmeur Hilde van der Wal.

In Sirens, director Rita Baghdadi follows Slave to Sirens, a feminist thrash metal band from Lebanon. The band navigates its way to fame during the October 17 Revolution, a period of Lebanese uprising against the mismanagement of a corrupt government. The band members are full of dreams, but are also plagued by (inter)generational traumas. In a country full of repression, misogyny and homophobia, the film illustrates the band’s struggle for freedom of self-expression.

This intimate documentary is a profound portrayal of a band with many facets. In one instance, the band members are seen at a protest, sirens wailing and tear gas hissing, screaming in light of the overthrow of the Lebanese regime. The next moment, we see them doing each other’s make-up before getting on stage, playing guitar and headbanging. In the midst of it all, a secret queer relationship starts to unfold between guitarist Lilas and someone from Syria.
