Paradise Is Burning

In een arbeiderswijk in Zweden redden drie zussen zich alleen, aan hun lot overgelaten door een afwezige moeder. De zestienjarige Laura probeert voor haar zeven- en twaalfjarige zusjes Mira en Steffi nog een zeker ritme na te streven, maar met de zomer op komst is een ouderloos leven vooral wild, zorgeloos en anarchistisch. Totdat Jeugdzorg contact opneemt en een afspraak wil maken. Laura gaat op zoek naar iemand die zich kan voordoen als hun moeder, zodat ze niet uit huis worden geplaatst. Het levert een bijzondere ontmoeting op, maar terwijl ze het telefoontje geheim houdt loopt de spanning op. Hoe houdbaar is de euforie van totale vrijheid?

Met drie jonge, briljante acteurs zonder enige eerdere ervaring, levert Mika Gustafson een fris, authentiek speelfilmdebuut af. De harde realiteit wisselt ze af met dromerige scènes, en wonderlijke coming-of-age ceremonies als Mira voor het eerst ongesteld wordt en Steffi een melktand verliest. Het grootse Paradise is Burning is een ode aan zusterliefde en zweeft knap tussen trots, kwetsbaarheid en melancholie.

In a working-class neighborhood in Sweden, three sisters are left by an absent mother to fend for themselves. 16-year-old Laura tries to maintain a certain everyday routine for her sisters Mira (12) and Steffi (7), but with summer approaching, a life without parents is wild and carefree, chaotic but happy. But when social services calls to make an appointment, Laura decides to look for someone who can pretend to be their mother - anything to prevent her and her sisters from being separated and placed in care. Laura does meet someone special, but as she keeps the phone call and the looming visit a secret, tension increases. How long can the euphoria of total freedom last?

With three young, brilliant actors without any previous experience, Mika Gustafson delivers a fresh, authentic feature debut. She alternates harsh reality with dreamy scenes and wonderful coming-of-age ceremonies, such as when Mira gets her first period and Steffi loses a milk tooth. Paradise is Burning is an ode to sisterly love and cleverly balances between pride, vulnerability and melancholy.
