Nelly & Nadine

Kerstavond 1944. In concentratiekamp Ravensbrück ontmoet Nadine de Brusselse Nelly, en ze zijn op slag verliefd. In de laatste maanden van de oorlog worden ze van elkaar gescheiden, en Nadine wordt overgebracht naar Zweden. Maar de liefde blijft, en wanneer ze elkaar na de oorlog terugvinden, vertrekken ze samen naar Venezuela. Zo'n 60 jaar later stuit regisseur Magnus Gertten op filmbeelden uit 1945 en ontdekt daarbij het wonderlijke, wereld-omvattende liefdesverhaal van Nelly & Nadine.

De documentaire wordt verteld vanuit het perspectief van Nelly’s kleindochter Sylvie. Als kind kende ze Nadine, maar ze vermoedde nooit dat er meer tussen de twee vrouwen bestond dan vriendschap, en haar moeder wilde het er niet over hebben. Wanneer de kist met dagboeken en foto’s die bij Sylvie op zolder staat voor het eerst open gaat, vallen de puzzelstukjes in elkaar. Na een indrukwekkende tour langs festivals wereldwijd was het veelgeprezen Nelly & Nadine eerder te zien op IDFA en het Noordelijk Film Festival. En nu op IFA, als onderdeel van de inmiddels jarenlange samenwerking met het 'Noordelijk'.

Deze film wordt op zowel zaterdag als zondag ingeleid door respectievelijk Marrit Greidanus en Loes Brinkman, programmeurs van het Noordelijk Film Festival.

Nelly meets her great love Nadine in the German concentration camp Ravensbrück. After the war, they move to Venezuela together. Nelly's granddaughter, who never knew about the nature of the relationship, delves into her grandmother's past.

It’s Christmas Eve, 1944, when Nadine meets Nelly in concentration camp Ravensbrück. It is love at first sight. Despite being separated in the last months of the war, Nelly and Nadine manage to later reunite and spend the rest of their life together in Venezuela. Some 60 years later, director Magnus Gertten stumbles across video footage from 1945 and discovers Nelly and Nadine’s astonishing love story.

This acclaimed documentary tells the story from the perspective of Nelly’s granddaughter Sylvie. As a young girl, she had met Nadine a couple of times, but Sylvie never knew the bond between Nadine and her grandmother was more than just friendship. It was kept a secret, even to some of their closest family. Now, Sylvie has decided to open Nelly's personal archives for the first time, and the pieces of this remarkable puzzle start to fall into place. Nelly & Nadine was featured at many festivals around the globe, including IDFA and the Noordelijk Film Festival. As part of our annual collaboration with the ‘Noordelijk,’ Nelly & Nadine will now be showing at IFA.

‘At the Noordelijk Film Festival in november, the audience rewarded Nelly & Nadine with an impressive 9,1. The theme of a lesbian relationship during World War II and the years following the war is beautifully shown with a great amount of archival materials. Whether or not it is your duty to share personal war stories from your family with the outside world, is an intriguing question, I think, and one that really speaks to the audience.'
