Before, Now & Then

Wanneer Indonesische communisten in de jaren '60 een staatsgreep proberen te plegen, wordt deze door het leger met geweld de kop ingedrukt. De jonge Nana (Happy Salma) weet te vluchten, maar haar echtgenoot en zoon niet. Jaren later hertrouwt Nana met de rijke Darga en leidt schijnbaar een onbezorgd leven. Maar haar man is ontrouw en haar traumatische verleden haalt haar in haar dromen in. Als ze Darga's minnares Ino ontmoet, vindt ze troost en uiteindelijk hoop op vrijheid.

Before, Now & Then van regisseur Kamila Andini is een subtiel en elegant gefilmd portret van een vrouw die worstelt met oorlogstrauma's en de sociale, patriarchale kaders van haar tijd. Andini: 'De onafhankelijkheid van Indonesië garandeerde geen vrijheid voor haar volk; druk en onderdrukking komt in altijd-veranderende vormen'. Haar film verhaalt over de geheimen van een vrouw - en maatschappij, en hoe zij hun problemen verborgen houden. Before, Now & Then werd tijdens de Berlinale genomineerd voor Beste Film, waar Laura Basuki een Zilveren Beer ontving voor haar rol als Ino.

Opgericht in 2003 vanuit de activistische wens om meer zichtbaarheid voor en bewustzijn over de Aziatische cultuur te creëren, streeft CinemAsia Film Festival naar een accuratere weergave en representatie van Aziatische (diaspora)culturen in Nederland. Het jaarlijkse CinemAsia Film Festival promoot de Aziatische cinema, en faciliteert discussie en debat, om schadelijke stereotypen en racisme te bestrijden en culturele empathie en verbondenheid te bevorderen.

Deze festivaleditie presenteert IFA in samenwerking met CinemAsia Film Festival twee films van de Indonesische regisseur Kamila Andini. Naast Yuni, te zien op 11 en 12 maart in DNK, vertonen wij ook haar nieuwste film Before, Now & Then (met inleiding door Lara Nuberg) op woensdagavond 8 maart in Forum Groningen (adres: Nieuwe Markt 1, Groningen).

Having lost her family to the war in West Java in the 1960s, Nana remarries and begins a new and wealthy, seemingly carefree life. But her new husband is unfaithful and her past keeps re-emerging in her dreams. Nana finds solace and hope in an unexpected friendship.

The late 1960s. Nana (Happy Salma) cannot escape her past. Poverty-stricken, having lost her family to the war in West Java, she marries again and begins a new life. Her new Sundanese husband is wealthy, but her place in the home is menial, and he is unfaithful. And in her dreams, her past keeps re-emerging. Nana suffers in silence until the day she meets Ino, and an unexpected friendship grows. Ino (Laura Basuki) is someone she can trust, someone who offers her comfort and to whom she can confide her secrets, past and present. Together, the two women find the hope of new freedom.

With her newest film, director Kamila Andini delivers a subtle but superb portrait of a woman battling the trauma of war, fighting to free herself from the patriarchal social dictates of her era. Independence for Indonesia did not guarantee freedom for its people; pressure comes in ever-changing forms. Elegantly shot with lush images and enveloping music, Before, Now & Then speaks of a woman's - and society's - secrets, and of how they keep their problems hidden. Nominated for Best Film at the Berlin Film Festival, at which Laura Basuki received a Silver Bear for Best Supporting Actress.

On Wednesday 8 March, International Women's Day, IFA presents this film in collaboration with Forum Groningen and CinemAsia Film Festival, at the Forum (address: Nieuwe Markt 1, Groningen). The screening includes an introduction by writer and historian Lara Nuberg. During the festival weekend you can catch Kamila Andini's previous film Yuni (2021) at the DNK in Assen.
