Onder de hete Griekse zon bereiden de animateurs van een all-inclusive eilandresort zich voor op het drukke toeristenseizoen. Papieren decors, glanzende kostuums en dansshows vullen het podium. Kalia (Dimitra Vlagopoulou), die terugkeert voor haar negende jaar op het resort, is de leider van de groep. Alles lijkt glamour and glitter, maar als de zomer intenser wordt en de werkdruk toeneemt, worden de nachten steeds slopender en wordt de ware strijd van Kalia onthuld.

In Sofia Exarchou's tweede film pakt de regisseur een van de belangrijkste assen van de Griekse economie aan: de toeristenindustrie. Het resultaat is een reflectie op het kapitalisme en een allegorie voor de maskers die worden opgezet in onze maatschappij. De film heeft behoorlijk veel prijzen kunnen binnenslepen dit festivalseizoen, waaronder de Gouden Alexander en Beste Actrice op zowel het Thessaloniki International Film Festival als Locarno Film Festival.

De vertoning van Animal op 5 maart vindt plaats in Vera Zienema in Groningen en wordt ingeleid door IFA-programmeur Hilde van der Wal.

Everything seems glamorous and wonderful, but the film shows us a flip side, less friendly and a lot more plain. A sharp and poignant critique of mass tourism, but also a reflection on capitalism and an allegory for the masks we put on within this system.

Under the hot Greek sun, the animators of an all-inclusive island resort prepare for the hectic tourist season. Paper decors, shiny costumes and dance shows fill the stage. Kalia (Dimitra Vlagopoulou), returning for her ninth year at the resort, is the leader of the group. Everything seems glamorous and glittery, but as the summer intensifies and the workload increases, the nights become more and more wrecking and Kalia's true struggles are revealed.

In Sofia Exarchou's second film, the director tackles one of the most important axes of the Greek economy: the tourist industry. The result is a reflection on capitalism and an allegory for the masks that are put on in our society. The film managed to win quite a few awards this festival season, including the Golden Alexander and Best Actress at both the Thessaloniki International Film Festival and Locarno Film Festival.
