We Are Fire (Draw for Change!)

DRAW FOR CHANGE! is een documentaireserie in 6 delen over vrouwelijke cartoonisten van over de hele wereld, die elk de grenzen en taboes van hun land opzoeken of doorbreken en in gesprek gaan met mensen die hun tekeningen daadwerkelijk (be)leven. Documentaire en animatiebeelden wisselen elkaar af, maar de boodschap blijft gelijk: strijdvaardige potloden worden ingeschakeld om het buitensporige geweld van het patriarchale systeem aan banden te leggen.

Op IFA zijn 2 afleveringen in één blok te zien: Behind the Lines duikt in de politieke cartoons van Amany Al-Ali (Syrië) en We Are Fire in de verbluffende socials van Mar Maremoto (Mexico City). Beide ‘artivisten’ bestrijden met hun werk maatschappelijke uitzichtloosheid en wekken bewondering op bij een nieuwe generatie. Door verdriet en woede te verwerken tot kleurrijke wensbeelden leggen de tekenaars de krijtlijnen voor een nieuwe toekomst.

Behind the Lines (Alisar Hasan, Alaa Amer)

Amany Al-Ali is een van de weinige vrouwelijke cartoonisten in Syrië. Ondanks lof en erkenning voor haar werk (vooral in Europa) heeft ze, naast angst voor extremisten, Russische bommen en Assads oprukkende troepen, te maken met dreigementen en uitsluiting. In Behind the Lines maakt ze ons deelgenoot van haar tekenlessen aan vrouwen en de band met haar nichtje. Ze deelt zowel haar kunst als haar steeds onzekerder toekomstperspectief.

We Are Fire (Karen Vázquez Guadarrama)

Cijfers in gendergerelateerd geweld in Mexico zijn onrustbarend: in de afgelopen zes jaar is het aantal verdwenen vrouwen en meisjes verdrievoudigd. In een land waar veiligheidsdebatten vaak gaan over drugscriminaliteit, doorbreken kunstenaars als Mar Maremoto de stilte rondom femicide. Mar deelt niet alleen haar werk online, maar legt contact met slachtoffers. In We Are Fire willen zowel Mar als Karen Vázquez Guadarrama het mechanisme achter de femicidecijfers blootleggen en zoeken naar wegen tot verandering.

Na afloop van de vertoning is er een nagesprek met regisseur Karen Vázquez Guadarrama (We Are Fire). De nieuwste graphic novel van cartoonist B. Carrot, over reproductieve rechten, zal vers van de pers op IFA te koop zijn. Let op: de films zijn Engels, Spaans en Arabisch gesproken en Engels ondertiteld. Ook het nagesprek is in het Engels.

DRAW FOR CHANGE! is a 6 part documentary series about female cartoonists from all over the world, each of whom explores or breaks the boundaries and taboos of their country, connecting with people who actually live the reality of their drawings. Documentary and animated images alternate, but the message remains the same: brave pencils are used to curb the excessive violence of the patriarchal system. IFA shows two of these episodes in one set: Behind the Lines delves into the political cartoons of Amany Al-Ali (Syria) and We Are Fire delves into the stunning socials of Mar Maremoto (Mexico City). Both 'artivists' combat social hopelessness with their work and are admired by a new generation. By processing sadness and anger into colorful wishful images, the artists expertly lay the outline for a new future.

Behind the Lines (Alisar Hasan, Alaa Amer)

Amany Al-Ali stands out as one of Syria's few female cartoonists. Her work has graced galleries in Europe but never received exposure within Syria's borders. Apart from fearing extremists, Russian bombings and Assads advancing troops, Amany faces threats, condemnation and degradation. In Behind the Lines, she invites us into her drawing classes for women and girls, into her home and her relationship with her niece. She shares her art as well as her view for the future, which is growing more uncertain by the day.

We Are Fire (Karen Vázquez Guadarrama)

Statistics on gender-based violence in Mexico are disconcerting: over the last six years, the number of disappeared women and girls has tripled. In a country where public conversations on matters of security and violence seem too often dominated by drug-related crimes, artists like Mar Maremoto try to break the silence around femicide. She shares her artwork online, provicing a safe space for her audience, but also engages with real victims. In We Are Fire, both Mar and director Karen Vázquez Guadarrama seek to unravel the reasons behind the high femicide rate and explore avenues for bringing about change.
