Silent Rebellion

Wanneer de vijftienjarige Emma in het Zwitserland van 1943 na een gewelddadige ervaring zwanger raakt, weigert ze zich te onderwerpen aan de morele dwang en hypocrisie van haar streng protestantse gemeenschap. In plaats van luid protest toont de film hoe emancipatie ook kan schuilen in volharding, lichamelijke autonomie en innerlijke vastberadenheid. Met een rustieke, intieme stijl maakt regisseur Marie-Elsa Sgualdo het persoonlijke onmiskenbaar politiek en laat ze zien hoe vrouwelijke zelfbeschikking juist in tijden van sociale repressie een daad van moed is.

When fifteen-year-old Emma becomes pregnant after a violent experience in Switzerland in 1943, she refuses to submit to the moral coercion and hypocrisy of her strict Protestant community. Rather than a loud protest, the film reveals how emancipation can also reside in endurance, bodily autonomy, and inner resolve. With a rustic, intimate style, director Marie-Elsa Sgualdo makes the personal unmistakably political, showing how female self-determination becomes an act of courage precisely in times of social repression.
