Als Rita Khan hoort dat haar oudere zus Lena haar kunstopleiding stopzet om te trouwen met Salim, een van de meest begeerde vrijgezellen van Londen, gaan bij haar alle alarmbellen af. Rita gelooft stellig dat ze haar zus moet behoeden voor haar aanstaande huwelijk, en met de hulp van haar vrienden maakt deze stuntvrouw-in-wording een plan voor de meest waanzinnige bruilofts-reddingsactie. Maar hoe misplaatst zijn haar vermoedens eigenlijk? Een komische, uitbundige mash-up van zusterlijke liefde, ouderlijke teleurstelling en martial arts – en een kick-ass soundtrack.

Net als in haar serie We Are Lady Parts, over een vrouwelijke moslim-punkband, focust regisseur Nida Manzoor in deze film op zussen uit een Brits-Pakistaanse familie – maar nu met martial arts: ‘Als tienermeisje kan alles zo intens voelen, dat het haast gewelddadig wordt,’ aldus Manzoor. In Polite Society combineert ze haar liefde voor grote actiefilms met de stijlfiguren van Jane Austen en een vleugje Bollywood tot een film die van het scherm afspat.

Just like in her series We Are Lady Parts, about an all-female Muslim punk band, director Nida Manzoor focuses on sisters from a British-Pakistani family - but now with added martial arts: ‘For teenage girls, everything feels so intense it’s almost violent,” Manzoor explains. In Polite Society she combines her love of big-budget action flicks with the tropes of a Jane Austen marriage comedy and flashes of Bollywood grandeur.
