Fantastique

Fantastique is een magisch-realistische documentaire over de 14-jarige contortioniste Fanta, die als één van de enige meisjes bij een circusgroep in Guinee-Conakry werkt. Ze jongleert tussen de zorg voor haar zieke moeder, school en wat ze het liefste doet; trainen, in de hoop mee te kunnen doen aan de volgende grote acrobatie show. Terwijl ze alle verwachtingen en verplichtingen probeert te overbruggen, begint Fanta te twijfelen aan haar droom en start de zoektocht naar haar eigen stem.

Regisseur Marjolijn Prins voert ons mee naar Guinee-Conakry, waar de veertienjarige Fanta (Fanta Turpin) haar dagen verdeelt tussen school, de zorg voor haar zieke moeder (Nana Gassama) en haar vurige droom: schitteren als acrobate in het Amoukanama-circus (met o.a. Balla Moussa Bangoura). Als een van de weinige meisjes in de groep zoekt ze haar evenwicht in een wereld waar verwachtingen, tradities en genderrollen haar vrijheid begrenzen. Prins laat documentaire en magisch realisme vloeiend samensmelten: nachtfotografie in magnetische tinten blauw en een bezielde natuur spiegelen Fanta’s lichaam en discipline. Intieme vriendschappen en muziek die als een hartslag door haar dagen stroomt, vormen haar innerlijke zoektocht naar een eigen stem. Het resultaat is een poëtische coming-of-agefilm over vrouw worden, balanceren tussen zorg en ambitie en de kracht van toewijding en grootse dromen.

Director Marjolijn Prins follows fourteen-year-old Fanta in Guinea-Conakry as she balances school, caring for her sick mother, and her dream of becoming an acrobat with the Amoukanama Circus. As one of the few girls in the troupe, Fanta navigates expectations, tradition, and restrictive gender roles while searching for her own freedom.

Blending documentary with elements of magical realism, the film uses striking night photography in deep shades of blue and an animated natural world to mirror Fanta’s inner life and physical discipline. Intimate friendships and a pulsing musical score accompany her coming-of-age journey, resulting in a poetic portrait of devotion, ambition, and the courage to dream beyond imposed limits.
